April 2018 Gleanings

This year we started our study of 1st Corinthians which is considered a soteriological epistle (also Romans, II Corinthians and Galatians) because of the emphasis on the doctrine of salvation. Chapters 1-4 deal with the divisions in the Church of Corinth.

GLEANING FROM OUR STUDY OF 1 CORINTHIANS 3rd and 4th CHAPTERS.

(We utilize the four components of basic inductive Bible study: Observation, Interpretation, Correlation and Application). These components are included in our study but may not be reflected here due to space constraints).

We spent a great deal of time with the first 4 verses of chapter 4 where Paul in our observation could not teach the Corinthians as he wanted to for they were babes in Christ and were carnal because of the divisions in the Church over their choice of Apollos or Paul. Paul tells them they are co-laborers with the Lord, and Jesus Christ is the only foundation. Focal verse 6- …God giveth the increase. We discussed how to evaluate our work and the importance of the motivating attitude.

Chapter 4

Paul tells the Corinthians they are all ministers (servants) of the Lord and Paul was not concerned about their attitude towards him but that the Lord is the judge of his ministry. Paul defends his authority and tells them to follow him for he preaches the gospel of Jesus Christ.

APPLICATION:

What do you do about the divisions in your Church?

Are their obvious problems of spiritual immaturity in your Church?

Do we prefer a special leader or instructor? How does this impact your spiritual growth?

Should the leadership be responsive toward division problems in the Church?

Do you feel many problems are ignored and do you notice the consequences?

We discussed all of these issues in the Bible study and we give glory to the Lord for His enlightenment of the Word of God and the mindset we must have to obey the Word and apply it to our lives.

PRAY:

Lord, we do pray for our churches that you show us how to deal with spiritual immaturity with humility and love.
